can't connect: error 11004

a colleague and I are both needing to access our server via sftp.
I'm in the UK and have logged on successfully but my colleague in the US has returned this error:

“Connection attempt unsuccessful. Error resolving connect-to address:
gethostbyname() failed:OS error 11004: The requested name is valid and was found in the database, but it does not have the correct associated data being resolved for.”

sftp access has only been set up today after an ftp exploit was found on this UK server.

We both use the same login/pass.
We're both new to sftp -  any help appreciated.

Hello Dave,

this is a network issue. To be more exact, it's a DNS resolving issue.

When a client is connection to a domain name (e.g. web browser connecting to www.google.com), the DNS (doman name server) resolves the domain name to appropriate IP address, which the client then connects to.

In your colleague's case, the DNS server is able to find an entry for the specified domain name, but it doesn't have a valid IP address assigned to.

The simplest and guaranteed-to-work solution is to remove the need for DNS resolving. This is done by replacing the domain name that sftpc is connecting to with appropriate IP address. The other solution is to use a different DNS server.

Best regards,
Andrej Andolsek
